Which one is for you? - A Guide
Benefits of NVQs
National Vocational Qualifications are nationally recognised qualifications in specific occupational areas that can be worked towards as part of a job. They can help employees and employers in several ways.
They help organisations in three key areas:
- To be more competitive in the market place - this safeguards the future for the company and employees.
- NVQs assist the development of quality standards and quality improvement.
- They provide ready measures of skill levels for recruitment and training.
Based on clear written standards agreed by employers, industry experts, training bodies and government they can help employees receive better training, recognition and worthwhile qualifications.
The written standards help organisations:
- Measure their strengths and weaknesses as a business.
- Judge the skills of employees.
- Identify and target priority needs.
- Recruit with greater confidence.
Improving Business Performance in our Industry
NVQs give employers a concise guide to what is best practice in their industry. In our knitting, lace and narrow fabrics sectors they link with initiatives such as TQM, ISO 9000 and Investors in People. They can reassure customers that the company is getting it right.
They can:
- Provide an anchor on quality.
- Offer industry benchmarks.
- Focus recruitment and development activities.
- Reduce staff turnover.
NVQs are a clear blueprint for appraisal, induction and training. They give our employers a detailed agenda for their induction and training programmes as well as topics for staff appraisal.
They can:
- Offer topics for performance appraisal.
- Provide objectives or goals for training.
- Help induction of new employees.
- Recognise employee's contribution.
- Reward success.
There are three levels of NVQs to choose from in this guide. Level 1 is broadly comparable to GCSE study and Level 3 is like A Level or National Diploma. Although not in this guide Levels 4 and 5 are degree level.
Remember that every organisation has its own way of working and jobs in your company may be slightly different. Even the type of machine you may use will change the details a bit.
Look up your job on the left hand side of the following table and then read across to find the correct NVQ.
